8.17.20: "It's Original Flooring"
^this week we got a noise complaint from the people who live below us, so we went down to the office to ask what time they said it was loud. I explained that we didn't do anything particularly obnoxious (not gonna deny we can be kinda loud sometimes) but, ALSO the floor is SUPER uneven and creaky in our house. The lady said "well, yeah it's original flooring".
This was kind of annoying bc we live in a cottonmill from the industrial revolution so our "original flooring" was definitely the problem. We decided it's a scam.
Last Monday we went to a really cool lighthouse and this field full of sunflowers. It was so nice to be outside all day and since it's SO muggy here, the wind at the beach was super nice.
On Wednesday we did virtual divisions (where we switch companions for a few hours, but we are still teaching on video calls). We talked to our friend Helder and the week before sister Kent and I had dropped off a bible and a book of Mormon to him. He told us that he had already read the whole introduction and Joseph Smith's testimony! I asked him if he had any questions and he said "I had a question but after I read, it was answered". This made us so happy and a few days later he texted us and said he had already read the chapter we assigned him and decided he was going to start from the beginning!
Sister Kent taught our friend Lucas during divisions and he told her that one day he was feeling really lonely and then he remembered that we always told him to read the Book of Mormon. So he decided to read the chapter we asked him to read (Alma 36) and it answered one of his questions. He said he realized he really should make going to church a bigger priority and that he wanted to read the BOM more bc it really helped him.
The last awesome thing that happened during our division was that I got to talk to a family from the other sister's ward and the dad of this family served in Brasil. After we talked about Brasil for a little bit, we realized that his mission included part of my mission bc mine was newer so it used to be São Paulo east. He had mission friends that were in Ubatuba (the area I was in the longest). He wanted to know how the branch was doing so he could tell all of them! There is also an island that he had served near and I told him that now there's a chapel on that island. He told me when he was there 20 years ago there weren't even any members there. It was so cool to tell him all of the good things happening there and for me to realize how much it has grown even if it was in the process of 20 years.
Another highlight of our week was helping hand out ice cream to the primary kids as they drove past the Church parking lot. It was so nice to be outside and actually meet some of the members! Our primary is an English ward combined with a Spanish and a Portuguese branch because all of the kids speak English anyways.
I wanted to share mosiah 23: 20-21
20 And it came to pass that they did multiply and prosper exceedingly in the land...
21 Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith
^the people in this part of the BOM were not doing anything wrong or bad but God sent them trials to test their patience and faith. Sometimes that's just the way it is, but we shouldn't be surprised when hard things happen or don't go the way we "planned".
Quotes from a devotional w/Anthony Sweat:
"In all your dealings, make friends in heaven"
"People are more important than things"
"The job we have is looking for divine things everyday"
Grateful: the Book of Mormon (it has ALL the answers), the sun, rainy sunday walk, new trails, our original flooring (;
tchau,
Sister Barton
This talk is old but it's a classic:
Come what may and love it
Pics: The video and quote are both recent posts that Rosie and I put together for our FB page. And the other is the complaint letter that our mission office shared with us about our loud noises. Oops!
